Italy & NASA

One of the pillar points of our β€œπ“π‘πžπ«πž 𝐒𝐬 𝐚 𝐋𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 π’π©πšπœπž 𝐒𝐧 𝐈𝐭𝐚π₯𝐲” campaign is focused on highlighting Italy’s contributions to the ever-expanding field of aerospace. The Agenzia Spaziale Italiana knows that these contributions are much easier to make when working with prolific partners like NASA – National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Italy is proud to be the only major European space agency with an exclusive bilateral collaboration agreement with NASA. The forming of this bilateral agreement led directly to the formation of the IXPE Program (Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer).

By obtaining X-ray polarimetry and polarimetric imaging of cosmic sources, IXPE addresses two specific science objectives: to determine the radiation processes and detailed properties of specific cosmic X-ray sources or categories of sources; and to explore general relativistic and quantum effects in extreme environments. This will grant the international community unprecedented knowledge on extreme and exotic astronomical objects such as stellar and supermassive black holes, neutron stars and pulsars.
